John 9:1-12
Key Verse 9:5

"I am the light of the world"

¡°While I am in the world, I am the light of the world¡±

Where our tragedy comes from has been a hot theological issue through out all human history. There has been many theories and explanations about the reason of our pain. For example, in Buddism, it is explained that our pain comes as a result of our wrongful acts of the previous lives. When we focus the reason of the tragedy, we should blame others or ourselves, falling into more distress and grieves. But today, we can learn how Jesus explains about the tragedy of our life. We can see the glory of God even in our deepest sorrow, when we accept and try to do something according to Jesus¡¯ word.

First, ¡°the work of God¡±(1-4)

Look at verse 1. ¡°As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.¡± Jesus noticed a blind man as he went along. Immediately, Jesus¡¯ heart went out to him, and was full of God¡¯s compassion. On the other hand, Jesus¡¯ disciples their heart was disturbed and was struggling with a theological question. They said to Jesus, ¡°Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?¡± Their question reflected typical Jewish thought and it was full of fatalism. The disciples assumed that the man born blind was being punished because of sin. The disciples¡¯ point of view was some what rooted on the biblical background. When they had read the Deutronomy, they remembered that God blesses those who obey his words and curses those who do not. This teaching, in fact, gives us clear direction of our life that we should turn from the way of sin, and live along the way of God. However, it brings misunderstanding and confusion when we try to apply this to every aspect of live. Then we blame someone and come to criticize when we see some one is in a pain.
When Job was in pain, all his friends suspected that he had done something so wrong toward God that his terrible situation had come. However, according to Job 1:1, his was ¡®blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil.¡¯ His friends couldn¡¯t even think that this terrible thing can come to a righteous man. So they only urged him to repent of something he had hidden. When the disciples tried to interpret the situation of a blind man, they became confused with a theological error. Their view point could not explain why this had happened to him. They could not blame the blind man, because he was blind from his birth, far before he could discern something and commit any sin. So they had to blame his parents, for this man¡¯s situation. No matter what their conclusion was, they fell into deep sorrow that they could not solve the problem of this man.

Then what is Jesus¡¯ answer on this man¡¯s situation? Look at verse 3. ¡°Neither this man nor his parents sinned,¡± said Jesus, ¡°but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.¡± This is the interpretation of Jesus on this man¡¯s tragedy. When we look at the man¡¯s tragedy with our human view, there is no suitable answer. There is nothing we can do for him. However Jesus says God displays his own glory through the man¡¯s life.

Who, then, is God? He is the one who created heavens and earth by his word. He motivates and guides the history toward his will. He is also the one who sent his one and only Son by his love for us to save us from our sins. This almighty and gracious God never lacks power or love to care for our life. If God had willed, he could have given the man a strong sight. But God did not do so. Then we can imagine that there would be something far special purpose that God had implanted in the situation. God can control everything in the universe. And God is always good. So, in any situation, we must trust God and find the will of God, and try anything according to it. We can find hope in any situation no matter how distressful it is with human viewpoint, when we believe the good will of God who presented his Son for us. This faith strengthens those who stand on it, and creates a history with them.

Of course, there are always great sorrow and pain on those who have to undertake the tragedy, that we cannot simply comfort them with our words. However, God has a great plan and will in the pain and sorrow.

Josephs sorrow was so great that he could have been drown from it. His sorrowful situation continued until he came to the deepest aspect to human life. He could have blamed his brothers, parents and even God. However, he didn¡¯t stop trusting God. The painful way he had experienced was in fact the way to become a prime minister of Egypt. It was the way God used Joseph for the sovereign will of God to save his people. In Genesis 50:20, Joseph confessed. ¡°You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being don, the saving of many lives.¡± No matter outwardly who intended what, God uses everything for his purpose and accomplishes his good will. Those who accept this truth can see beautiful tomorrow, that is beyond the current situation of pain and sorrow.

Therefore, we must see our life by faith and interpret it according to God¡¯s goodness, and put a positive expectation. Saint Paul urged, (Philippians 4:7) ¡°Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!¡± Although we no not see all God meant, we do not understand everything, it is always something we can rejoice and be thankful in the Lord. There is always God¡¯s will that never fails. Therefore, we can set our painful situation as a starting point toward a new life and new history. Pains and sorrows are, in fact, necessary for the glory of God and for our spiritual growth. It strengthens us and helps us depend more on God who gives true hope for us.

Second, ¡°We must do the work of him who sent me¡±

Look at verse 4. ¡°As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.¡± Jesus used the word ¡°day¡± because his disciples¡¯ hearts had been darkened because of the blind man. The disciples had sorrowful and fatalistic thoughts when they saw the blind man. They thought they could do nothing for this man. So Jesus encouraged them by reminding them that it is still ¡°day time¡±. Here, Jesus used the word ¡°we.¡± Jesus and Jesus¡¯ disciples were called by same God, and was given a same purpose of life. So they must abandon their human view point and obtain Jesus¡¯ view point.
Not everyone can do the work of God. Participating a saving work of God, restoring the fallen creation order, and to glorify God can be done only by Jesus¡¯ disciples. Other than the disciples, there is no one who can proclaim that the whole world is under God¡¯s judgment. No one can proclaim the good news of joy that saves people from sins and heal their souls. No professors, doctors, or even the president can do that. Only Jesus¡¯ disciples can do such works.
Jesus also says, ¡°Night is coming, when no one can work.¡± There is always a proper time to do. Jesus says this is the proper time. When night comes no one can work. We have many excuses why we can do now. But when the real night comes, people will regret that they could do anything during the day.
Then how can we do the work of God? Look at verse 5. ¡°While I am in the world, I am the light o of the world.¡± Jesus is the light of the world. When this light is in our heart, we are strengthened to do the work of God. When we do not accept and have this light in our heart, our heart is darkened as if it is night outside. But Jesus¡¯ light is the light that overcomes all the darkeness of our heart and of the whole world. In John¡¯s gospel, Jesus is repetidly introduced as the light of the world, of his people, and of each person. This Jesus shined the life of distress and pain. This Jesus is with us now. So it is the very time that we should do the work of God. We should fight against the darkness of our heart and shine this light toward the world. Now is the time that miracle works.

Look at verse 6. ¡°Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the salvia, and put it on the man¡¯s eyes. ¡°Go, he told him, ¡°wash in the Pool of Siloam¡±¡±¡± What Jesus practically did was quiet simple and somewhat rough. But the blind man simply obeyed what Jesus had said. Then he gained a new sight on his eyes. His eyes opened and he saw the beautiful world around him. He saw the trees, birds, people, and he saw Jesus who opened his eyes. By Jesus, all the sorrows of his life has gone. He gained a new life.

Jesus simply used the spit and mud. It is not elegance but somewhat even dirty. But it was not his method that cured the blind man, but his faith and God¡¯s compassion in his heart on this man. Jesus¡¯ disciples can do the same word as Jesus. It is not the matter of the ability, knowledge, money, or anything. The history begins when the disciples have same compassion and faith that Jesus had.
No matter what we think of ourselves, Jesus called each one of us as his disciples. Jesus wants us to open our eyes to see his spiritual truth. Jesus wants us to see the work of God upon our lives. Our heart is sometimes in darkness because of our sins, or tragidies. However, it is always day time that we can be thankful and do the work of God, as long as we accept the light of Jesus in our heart. Those who accepts this truth can do the work of God and see the glory of God, no matter what situation is around them. May God bless each of our heart with this truth, and help us do the work of God in this world!
