John chapter 21
Key verse : 17

Do You Love Me?

"The third time he said to him, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you."

In the previous chapter we have seen that Jesus had crucified and dead as he had mentioned, and all of his disciples leaved him. They got back to their usual lives, even though they already knew Jesus had risen. They had no promise in their lives, their minds were empty. Through today's message, we can learn how graceful and sincere Jesus' love toward his disciples is. Jesus forgave all of fault Peter had committed and gave him a mission. I pray that through this message we may remind our mission which God is willing to achieve through our lives.

Part I. Jesus appeared again

The story of the last chapter of John begins with an event, which is, Jesus appeared to his disciples again by the Sea of Tiberias. Here is the thing. One day, the disciples Simon and Thomas, Nathanael and others went out for fishing. I guess they were hungry, and Simon was once a good fisher so they might thought fishery as a good means of living. "I'm going out to fish" Simon Peter said, like a captain, and fellas followed him. "I'll go with you". They got into a boat and rowed into middle of the ocean. They tried hard to catch fishes, throwing nets into the sea and drawing nets again and again. However, they couldn't get anything even a small fish until next morning. What are the odds that this kind of thing could happen? Is that real Peter was once a fisher? What a shame. But We can understand their miserable situation. They were suffering for so-called sense of failure. When we fail something again and again, fatalistic thought comes and stirs our mind. We must overcome this. However, the problem becomes serious when we fail again and again so that we can't control these feelings. Disciples were the same. They threw the net again and again but failed. Maybe fishery was their last hope to maintain their lives. They were frustrated and discouraged.
However, Jesus came to them. Look at verse 4, "Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus." Jesus saw them wandering, for not having any mission. He called those clumsy fishers. "Friends, haven't you any fish?" "No." They replied. Then he said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." The disciples followed, and when they did, they were unable to haul the net because of a number of fishes. A miracle occurred!

I think some of you noticed this scene is very similar to what we have seen in Luke chapter 5. In this chapter, Jesus told Peter to put out to deep water and let down the nets to fish. It was ridiculous to do that but once Peter obeyed, he experienced miracle. This thing must be deeply ingrained in his memory. Peter must be remembered that thing and he might recognized the stranger who was in the shore. And other disciple shouted, "It is the Lord!!" as soon as Peter heard this, he put on his shirt and dived into water. Why Peter suddenly acted like this? Maybe it is because he was so glad to see the Lord again. He didn't forget to put on his garment, because he wanted to be seen polite to Jesus. He truly loved the Lord, and his love was revealed by this sudden action. His brain was full of delight to meet the Lord, he didn't care of his fishes. How about other disciples? Well, They followed in the boat, after finishing drawing the net full of fishes.

They landed shore, and met Jesus standing on. The disciples were glad to meet Jesus again, but also they were frightened because they once left Jesus. There was no one to talk first. They saw a fire of burning coals with fish on it, and some bread. Jesus broke the silence , saying "Bring some of the fish you have caught." Jesus feed his disciples with these abundant meals. He didn't rebuke them for their weaknesses. He forgave them and feed them. How deep is Jesus' love?

Part II. Jesus reinstates Peter

See verse 15. When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?" Jesus called him Simon, not Peter. Why? The name Peter was from Jesus, as a voucher of Jesus' disciple. Simon Peter was devastated for leaving Jesus. If Jesus had called him Peter, he might have cried out for shame. Jesus knew this.
"Yes, Lord," Peter replied. "you know that I love you." Why Jesus asked like this? He can read man's thought so he doesn't need to ask this. However, it was essential to recover the relationship, and to reinstate Peter as a disciple. He confessed his love toward Jesus, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." which was from his deepest mind. Jesus said, "Feed my lambs."

Jesus asked same question to Peter, "Do you love me?" 3 times. Why? I guess, Peter didn't realize why Jesus was repeatedly asking him until the third time. We can easily notice that verse 15 to 17 are similar sentences, but only verse 17 records "Peter was hurt". I think the bible was written like this because Peter finally remembered the fact that he abandoned Jesus 3 times before. And that recognition hurt his feeling. Jesus wanted to forgive his fault by his love. It shows us that the broken relationship between Jesus and Peter as a teacher and a disciple, was recovered.

After asking whether he loved Jesus, Jesus gave him a mission. It was, to take care of his lambs. What does it mean "to feed my sheep?" It means to provide food for God¡¯s children so they can grow strong and healthy. This includes both physical and spiritual food. Jesus fed his disciples when they were hungry, caring for their immediate needs. More than that, Jesus fed his disciples spiritually. He taught God's word in front of people, showed the work of Holy spirit and evidence of God. He showed himself as a true worshiper. He always prayed and obeyed God's will. Through Jesus, disciples changed from physical men into spiritual men.

Jesus commands Peter and other disciples (including us) to do the same for others. It's not easy, actually it's very difficult to follow because it goes against our sinful nature. Sometimes we are so tired that we might want to give whole things up. Then why Jesus wants us to follow this hard mission? Why should we follow his commands? The only reason is that, Jesus loves us and we love him. John 14 :15 says, "If you love me, you will obey what I commanded." If it were without love, just compulsive and strict, maybe no one could bear. "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Rom 5: 8) God showed his unfailing love through Jesus. Jesus' cross is the true evidence of God's lavish love for us. Only by God's grace and love we follow Jesus- the life of denying ourselves and taking his cross. And it was the main reason why Jesus asked Peter, "Do you love me?" 3times, before giving him a mission. If we don't love Jesus, we cannot follow him nor obey his commands.

I learned two precious things from today's message. First, the attitude toward God, like Simon Peter. As we have seen, when Peter recognized Jesus, he behaved like a warrior to see Jesus. I really need that spirit since I felt that's what God really want me to have. Actually, sometimes I didn't worship God even I was in the worship hall. I listened to God's word, I sang hymns but not wholeheartedly. I was just standing there.
I misunderstood that if the message was touching and impressive, then I thought I worshiped God in spirit and in truth. If not, I regarded it as just-good message but I felt somewhat unsatisfied. Maybe I just thought worship as a concert. I find myself this was entirely wrong. The important thing is our mind and attitude toward God, not how impressive the message is. If we come here with our mind settled like "Lord, I really want to meet you. I'm thirst for your word." then, I believe, God gladly receive our worship. And I believe if our heart are ready, God will bless us with his grace even when the message isn't good. May God anoint me with the holy spirit, so that I could please the Lord by worship. Amen.

Second, I strongly felt that whatever I do for God, it should be based on love. It should be based on relationship with God, not on worldly work schedule. When I was full of spirit and love, nothing seemed burdensome. By remembering the Christ's blood and cross, I could endure many hardships with delight. God's word gave me power to struggle against my inner sins. That is exactly why I could accept this burdensome english message about 2 weeks ago. In retrospect, I was full of spirit, at that time. However, when the semester began, the situation changed and I slightly regretted my choice. I couldn't care of this message till last friday since there were a lot of works to do. I enrolled some math major class for preparing graduate school, the course was a little fast so I needed to review. And I was selected as a Mentor for mid-school student, and Health-economics tutor for junior major class. And I suddenly got information about other scholarships so I needed to prepare my resume, and Korea university Christian Union staff gathering resumed so I needed to attend there. Sorry for lengthy lines, but I was really tired. Perhaps God knew my tiredness so he planned to serve today's message. Now Jesus is talking to my ear, "Geonsoo, Do you love me? Feed my lamb." I should answer; Yes, Lord. I love you.
Now I'm thankful to God for allowing me to prepare this message. I feel somewhat comfortable now. Thank you for teaching me the precious thing that I should remember your suffering love. I pray that I may personally realize your great love, step by step.

Here is the conclusion. Jesus came to recover the broken relationship with his disciples and gave them the holy mission. We can follow Jesus even though we sometimes tumble, only by depending on his unfailing love. Now Jesus is asking us, "Do you love me? Feed my sheep." I pray that we may remind Jesus' love in every minute. I pray that I may undertake the holy mission with pleasure.
Let me pray.
