Jesus is Immanuel-God with us

Matthew 1:18-25
Key Verse: 1:23

"'The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel'--which means, 'God with us.'"

Merry Christmas!...

The weather is very cold. It's getting freezing isn't it? If someone asks me "which season do you hate most?" Normally, I say it is winter. I used to feel lonely and gloomy. When I was a little boy, I only waited for Christmas to come. I don't know what I expected exactly but I looked forward to something special. "Love, gifts, family, hope and extra..." I waited and hoped for such things. I think most people are same. Why do we expect these things at Christmas? Because, it's the day Jesus came to us as a baby. Jesus is the best gift from God. Jesus is God's love. Jesus is our true hope.
I hope through today's message we may learn about Jesus more, especially the Immanuel Jesus.

Part one: Joseph, a son of David

As history attests, romance is the starting point of history: Where there is no romance, there is no history. Likewise, Matthew's Christmas message begins with a beautiful romance between Joseph and Mary. Look at verse 18a. "This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph...." Joseph was a country man who lived in the country town of Nazareth. Though Joseph was a carpenter, he was born in the lineage of King David. Joseph was the right person to be married to Mary, the mother of Jesus. In God's providence, Joseph was engaged to her. According to Jewish custom, engagement was tantamount to marriage, but the couple had to spend one year of engagement time before the wedding. Obviously Joseph worked harder and harder day by day in the hope of getting together with Mary.
One day an unexpected thing happened to them. Look at verse 18b. "...but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit." As God had promised, a Savior of the world was to be born from the offspring of a woman (Ge 3:15). This Savior had to be a perfect man (Heb 4:15), and at the same time he had to be the perfect God. So Jesus was born of the Holy Spirit through the virgin Mary. For this, Mary had to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit before she got together with Joseph.
However, in humanly view Joseph and Mary got into big trouble. Verse 18 says that Mary was found to be with child. This suggests that Mary did not tell Joseph. Rather, Joseph discovered it through the obvious change in her body shape. Joseph could only conclude that Mary¡¯s pregnancy was a result of unfaithfulness.
How did Joseph respond? Look at verse 19 "Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly." Joseph did not give in to his emotional turmoil, nor was his love transmuted into hatred. Bible says Joseph her husband was a righteous man. He endured his pain and hatred from disappointment and sense of betrayal. He tried to be not cruel but, he wanted to separate from Sin clearly and entrusted God with everything, and stepped back. Joseph dealt with this problem in God.
It was the custom of the time to expose a woman who became pregnant before marriage to public disgrace, and then stone her to death. But Joseph made a decision in God not to expose Mary to public disgrace. The concept of Joseph in regard to God's righteousness is clear that love of God is its foundation. Thinking is one thing and acting is another.
We learn from Joseph how to make godly decisions in a crisis. First, we must see things in God, and in light of his law. We must be willing to carry out God¡¯s law, though it is unpleasant and costly. Second, we must think of others before ourselves. Then we can make a sound decision in the sight of God.
Look at verse 20. ¡°But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ¡®Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.¡¯ God intervened and told Joseph to take Mary home as his wife. When the angel addressed Joseph, he called him ¡°Joseph son of David.¡± Humanly speaking, Joseph was a Jewish carpenter in an oppressed nation living in relative obscurity. He seemed to be nobody. But God recognized him as a son of King David. God regarded Joseph highly because of his spiritual heritage. As a legal heir of David, Joseph could register Jesus in David¡¯s line. Furthermore, Joseph had the fear of God in his heart like David did, and compassion for his people like David did. Joseph was a son of David in spirit and character, as well as in name. God chose this Joseph to be a human father to Jesus.
Look at verse 21. ¡°...you are to give him the name Jesus....¡± God gave Joseph the mission of naming the boy Jesus. It was a great privilege. God trusted Joseph to provide a good environment for Jesus and to protect Jesus like a father. This would involve hardship, even risking his life. Obviously, God regarded Joseph as the best shepherd candidate. God entrusted his precious Son Jesus to Joseph.
Look at verses 24-25. ¡°When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.¡±
Joseph obeyed God absolutely. First he took Mary home as his wife. People in his community would question his integrity. Joseph took the responsibility and all blame from others. Joseph bore their reproach, defending Mary. He protected Mary like a father. Also, Joseph named the boy Jesus. In doing so, Joseph expressed his faith in God¡¯s word. Joseph believed that Jesus really was the Savior of the world. Joseph¡¯s faith and obedience made him very useful to God. To some, Joseph¡¯s role is unappealing. Joseph was a humble environment-maker, known as ¡°the husband of Mary.¡± But Joseph was overjoyed and thankful to be used greatly by God as a shepherd for Mary and Jesus.
Joseph and Mary had the most fruitful house church in history. It was through their faith in God and obedience. God was at the center of their hearts. God was at the center of their family.

II. Jesus saves his people from their sins (21)

Look at verse 21. "She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." The name Jesus means, "The Lord saves." In this verse, "His people" refers to the people of Israel. At that time, the people of Israel was under the oppression of the Roman Empire. They lived in constant fear and misery. All of them thought they were miserable because of the Roman occupation. But they were miserable not because of the Roman occupation but because of their sins.
Russian communists thought they were miserable because they could not share bread equally. When they could share bread among themselves equally, just as they had wanted, they should be happy. But they were still miserable, not because of human conditions, but because of their sins. What each person needs most is salvation from sin. Yet there are so many people who have no idea about the sin problem. What is sin? Sin is to separate or to cut one¡¯s relationship to God through disobedience. Some symptoms of sin are meaninglessness, depression, guilt, shame, fear and despair. One young person is paralyzed inwardly. Sin is the cause of this paralysis. Sin makes him helpless to serve God or do his homework. Sin robs him of spiritual desires and makes him as petty as an alley cat. Yet he does not think that sin is the real problem. Rather, he blames the system and other people.
Then how does Jesus save us from our sins? Jesus saves us from our sins through his death and resurrection. While on earth, Jesus served all kinds of needy people. Jesus healed the sick, drove out evil spirits and raised the dead. Most of all, Jesus planted the living hope of the kingdom of God in the hearts of the people. But Jesus was despised and rejected by men. It was mostly because his holy life convicted them of sin. So they conspired against him. Wonderful Jesus was arrested like a common criminal and brought to trial. With no charge, he was condemned and beaten. Finally Jesus was crucified. Though Jesus was treated in such a way, he did not open his mouth to defend himself or threaten others. Instead, Jesus prayed, ¡°Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing¡± (Lk 23:34a). Then Jesus bowed his head and breathed his last breath. Jesus died on the cross for our sins. Isaiah 53:4-5 says: ¡°Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.¡± Jesus¡¯ death is the sacrifice of atonement that God accepted for our sins. On the third day, God raised Jesus from the dead. Jesus¡¯ resurrection opened the way for us to have eternal life in the kingdom of God. (Amen!) While on earth, we can live as God¡¯s precious children and serve his holy purpose. Luke 1:74,75 explains that Jesus came ¡°...to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and to enable us to serve him without fear in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.¡± In this way Jesus saves us from our sins. Praise Jesus!

III. Jesus is Immanuel–God with us (22-23).

Verses 22 and 23 tells us how Jesus, the Immanuel God, saves his people from their sins. Let's read today's key verse, verse 23 in one voice. ready go "'The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel which means, 'God with us.'"
Why is the immanuel God important? What does it mean to us? It is clear when we think about the opposite of "immanuel". Let's think about "being separated from God" or "being abandoned by God". Let's imagine we become orphans. An orphan is a child who is permanently bereaved of his or her parents. An orphan is a child who has lost his or her parents. Some parents abandon their children, so the children become orphans.
Have you ever met any orphans? When I was a middle school student, I had a friend from an orphanage. He has his real mother but in some reason he had to be sent to the institute for orphans. What I remember still now is his untidy features and his rough and wild character. In my memory, I remember one thing, that one day he was really happy. He told me, his mother visited him. He went to some special place and had dinner together, and his mother bought a cassette player for him. He was really proud of the cassette player and he boasted it to me. He was looked really happy. But, one or two month later, he became really sad and angry. He said that, his mother promised to visit him but she did not come. He smashed the cassette player on the ground. I could see some tears in his eyes. When I read and tried to think about "Immanuel God", the meaning did not clearly come. But when I could think about this friend. My heart was really moved. I realized I was an orphan before I met Jesus Christ. I realized the meaning of Immanuel "God with us" is truly special.
John 1:10,11 says. "He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him." Here, His own means people of Israel. God came to his own people Israel first, but they did not accept. and John 1:12,13 says "Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God."
Actually, We did not have the right to become his children as we were slaves of sin before Jesus was born. After the birth of Jesus, we become God's Children by believing him. Amen.
It is interesting that the word "Immanuel" is found only in Isaiah and Matthew in the bible. Why is it? Immanuel Jesus was so special and important especially for Matthew. As we know, Matthew was a tax collector. We know at that time how Israel people extremely hated tax collectors. When he was young, he chose money rather than God for his future and happiness. But, he became lonely and miserable. He was a misfit and a spiritual orphan.
Jesus came to this lonely man and gave true hope by being his disciple. Matthew could see God in Jesus. Matthew was a very difficult person to help because of his blind selfishness. Maybe, Matthew made Jesus sick and tired everyday. But Jesus was always with him, until he was healed of his blind selfishness and his wound. Jesus was with him until his greatness in God was fully restored. To Matthew, "God with us" was the good news of great joy for all the people, especially for himself.
The Immanuel God came to this world as a child. This verse is a clear expression that God is love. This verse means that God would send his one and only Son to this world as a child to be born of Mary. Almighty God came down to this world as a helpless child. Why did God do so? It was so that he might be with all sorrowful people and save them from their sins and hurts. While on earth, Jesus was always with sorrowful people. While on earth, Jesus was always with helpless and hopeless people. While on earth, Jesus was always with very fatalistic people. It was to save them from their sins of fatalism and bring them back to his glorious kingdom. All men are fatalistic because of the sting of death. But in Jesus there is no death, because he came to this world to save fatalistic sinners by being with us. Jesus is the God of Immanuel.
I hope this Winter, we may fill up our heart and spirit with love from Immanuel Jesus. I hope, even the weather is cold, our heart will become hotter than before. As Jesus took care of all sorrowful people, we may help others especially who need spiritual care around us.
