David and Goliath

¡°David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied
.¡±

1. Saul and Israelites Became Afraid(1-11, 16)

Philistines and Israelites gathered their forces for war. A champion named Goliath came to the front line. He was about 3 meter tall. He had a bronze helmet, a coat of scale armor made of bronze and bronze greaves. His armor weighed around 57kg. He carried a bronze javelin and a spear. Its iron point was about 7kg. He had a shield bearer to carry his huge shield. He looked like a giant monster. He shouted out loud to the Israelites. Look at verses 7-8. "Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us." It was not a game, but was a serious life matter if they would become slaves or not.

Goliath threatened Israel day and night for forty days(16). Then what did Israel do? Did they fight courageously with firm faith? Look at verse 11. King Saul and Israelites became terrified. They all ran away in great fear(24). During the forty days, Goliath didn't actually kill anyone. He just threatened them, flexing his muscles. His weapons were huge and impressive. It was all designed to plant paralyzing fear. The devil's fear makes us doubt everything we depended on in the past. No one can overcome the devil's fear on their own. Courageous faith, trusting in God's help is the only way. Courageous faith overcomes the devil's fear.

2. David Came to the Battlefield (12-30)

Suddenly, Bible moves its focus to a young boy, David. He was the youngest son among his eight brothers. He was too young to join Israel military. One day, his father told him go to his brothers in their military camp and bring some news. David was a not a soldier, but God led him into the battlefield. David heard Goliath's shouting his usual defiance. David heard his challenge. David saw Israel army running away in fear. This made David burn with anger. He could not stand still hearing a Philistine mocking God.

Look at verse 26. "David asked the men standing near him, "What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?"" David took responsibility for God's name and honor. He made a resolution that he should challenge Goliath.

Honestly speaking, David didn't stand a chance. What was David counting on? David had courageous faith. He trusted that God was with him and had prepared him for this very moment. David did not think he needed anything else. It was not confidence in his ability. Nor was it a vague hope that God might "do something" to stop Goliath. It was very specific faith that God was watching his every step so that he would not stumble.

3. The Lord Will Deliver Me (31-37)

What David said was overheard and reported to Saul, and Saul sent for him. Look at verse 32. "David said to Saul, "Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him."" A man of faith always has great influence. David encouraged King Saul to take heart.

But Saul could not let him go to fight. He was only a boy and Goliath was a skilled fighter. His oldest brother Eliab also misunderstood David's faith(28). His father Jesse also did not put any significance in him(16:11). Nobody thought David would be a match to Goliath. Everyone thought he was just a naive young boy. But what was David's confession?

Look at verses 34-37a. "But David said to Saul, "Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine."" David's shepherding experience was a sufficient proof for him to fight.
David's shepherding his father's sheep was not easy. Sheep are very vulnerable. They have no natural defenses. And they are very tasty for predators. Therefore, the shepherd must be on guard at all times to keep the sheep safe. David took the responsibility of protecting his sheep to another level. He did not think that it was okay to lose one sheep. David gave his full heart to being a shepherd to the point of risking his life. He discovered that God gave him necessary strength to defeat even lions and bears. What great faith! His heart to defend his father's sheep was outstanding. It is the heart of our shepherd God, "No one can snatch (my sheep) out of my Father's hand." (John 10:29b)

David gave his heart to be the best shepherd he could possibly be. By giving his heart, he made himself useful and a blessing. And this was the character that God saw in David and wished to exalt. Through his early life as a shepherd, God was building in David the character of a spiritual leader. No one saw what David was doing, but God saw it and was pleased. As a result, God chose David to be the shepherd of his people Israel. In the same way, when we make a decision to give our full hearts in serving our parents, our bosses, and sheep, God is pleased. He makes us as men of faith, and courageous shepherds.

4. I Come Against You in the Name of the Lord Almighty (38-52)

David believed that God would deliver him from the hands of the giant Philistine and give him the victory for the sake of Israel's honor. Look at verses 45-47. "David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will hand you over to me, and I'll strike you down and cut off your head. Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD'S, and he will give all of you into our hands.""

How can we have courageous faith like David did? First, he got rid of everything that hindered him. Saul's armor would have seemed to provide him some protection. But David knew that if he tried to fight Goliath on Goliath's terms, he would lose. So he came against Goliath essentially naked. There is a deep spiritual meaning behind this. What hinders us in the spiritual fight? Our sins make us weak and vulnerable. So, what do we do? Usually we try to cover them up. But this only adds to the burden, like Saul's useless armor. The only real solution is to repent. We should shed all of our justifications, all our cover-ups. We should confess our sin by faith in Jesus' cross. Fully clothed in Christ, we are free to be carried along by God's grace and power.

Then what did David do? He did not worry about what he did not have. Instead, he found wisdom from God to use what he did have. He had skill in slinging stones. He was fast. Goliath had massive weapons and massive defenses. They planted fear, but they also weighed Goliath down. David would not be able to get past those defenses with strength. But he could do so with speed and accuracy. So David did not wait around for Goliath to come to him. He ran at Goliath making him hesitate in confusion. And then David struck with one perfectly aimed stone. It sank into his enemy's unprotected forehead. Without a sword, David killed Goliath.

This week I did not have much time to prepare for this message. And a great dinner within my organization was to be held on Friday night. I worried that the dinner would be over the whole night so that I would have very limited time for the message. I prayed that the dinner would be cancelled and we have lunch instead so that I would spare some more time for the message. Then God answered my prayer on the very day just as I had prayed for. People wondered asking, "Why was the dinner cancelled?" But only I knew that God answered my prayer.

This gave me confidence that he would listen to my prayers because he was pleased of my little prayer. This year I am praying for my personal spiritual revival. And from this little prayer experience, I learned that God would answer to my spiritual desire. David learned and grew from his past experiences when he had faith. I also want to learn from my experiences of faith and grow steadily. May God be with me for my spiritual revival this year. May God bless me with more spiritual desires to live for his Glory.

In many ways, Jesus' disciples are like David challenging Goliath. Though the number of Jesus' disciples is not large, we can still win the victory. Let's learn from David how to build our character as spiritual leaders for our sheep and our nation. May God bless our nation with many David-like leaders. May God raise Korea as a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.
