1 Samuel 24:1–22
Key Verse: 24:5-6

THE LORD FORBID THAT

¡°After wards, David was conscience stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe. He said to his men. ¡°The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD¡¯s anointed, or lift my hand against him; for he is the anointed of the LORD.¡±

We often use the term ¡°give and take.¡± I don't know if it is an original English idiom or just a Konglish, but it surely expresses most people's way of behavior. We try to return the favor that we received. But we try to pay back the damage once we get hurt by others. In today's passage, David was chased to be killed by Saul. If you were in David's shoes, how would you respond to Saul? From "give and take" spirit, we are likely to take revenge on Saul. We will sneak into his tent secretly and eliminate him completely. But today, David did not follow our familiar principle. He did not give the same thing as he took, even if he had good opportunity to do so. Then why did not David revenge himself on Saul? What other principle did he have? This time is for thinking over this matter. I pray God may grant us wisdom and modest heart to hear the words about David.

1. The Lord forbid that.

Look at verse 1-2. ¡°After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, "David is in the Desert of En Gedi." So Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and set out to look for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats.¡±

In the last chapters, God had delivered David and his men at Sela. Saul¡¯s army were closing in on David to capture and kill him. But suddenly a messenger came and reported that the Philistines were invading the land. Saul had to stop his pursuit and go fight the Philistines. After successful campaign against the Philistines, he promptly returned to chasing David again. He was told where David was hiding. It was the Desert of En Gedi. So Saul took 3000 elite forces from all Israel and began to look for David near the Crags of the Wild Goats.

In Saul, we see the nature of the enemy. The enemy never gives up. We wish that our spiritual enemies would stop pursuing us, but they don¡¯t. We think all troubles vanish permanently and want to take a rest, but the enemy comes back again and again. tempting us into our past sins. It will keep coming until we achieved the permanent victory and arrive in the heavenly kingdom. So let us be alert and always prepare for their repeated attacks.

David and his men fell into deep trouble. They appeared to come to a dead end. But at this moment, things began to get really interesting. Vs. 3 says Saul had to relieve himself. This means he had to go to the bathroom. Saul chose a cave as his bathroom. But the bathroom he chose was the very cave where David and his men were hiding. Saul entered the cave by himself away from his men¡¯s eyes, which might be his tomb.

David's men found Saul to come alone into their hiding. Naturally, they were excited. It was a great opportunity that God had granted them. They could surely eliminate Saul. Then, no more living as fugitives and no more living from hand to mouth. So they urged David to take action. They said, ¡°This is the day the LORD spoke of when he said to you, ¡°I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.¡±

Now what was David's response? Verse 4b says, ¡°Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul¡¯s robe.¡± They had expected David to cut off Saul's head or stabbed him in the chest. But David did not do as his men expected. He only got hold of Saul¡¯s robe and cut off a piece from the corner! All the excitement fizzled out like gas from a can of Coke. What¡¯s wrong with David? How could he allow this opportunity to slip away?

Now let¡¯s read verses 5 – 6. ¡°Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe. He said to his men. ¡°The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD¡¯s anointed, or lift my hand against him; for he is the anointed of the LORD.¡± Most people were troubled because David did not kill Saul. But David was troubled because he cut off a corner of Saul's robe! Saul's robe was the symbol of his authority and royalty. We remember that Jonathan took off his robe and clothed David with it after David had killed Goliath. It was a way of welcoming him into the royal family. David thought he dishonored Saul's kingship by cutting a piece of his robe and it made him conscience-stricken.

Saul was a bad king and he must pay for his sins. There are enough reasons to eliminate Saul. He killed many priests at Nob. He chased after innocent David and his men. However, David did not use Saul¡¯s wrongdoing as an excuse to disrespect him. He did not take revenge on Saul even if he tried to kill David. To David, Saul was the Lord's anointed. It was not a human being but Lord, the Most High that put oil on Saul's head and established him as king. David did not fear Saul, but he feared the LORD who anointed Saul. So he should not have dishonored him, no matter how sinful he might be. He was conscience-stricken when he cut off a piece of Saul's robe.

If Saul was eliminated, David could be king of Israel. He did not have to live a suffering life as a fugitive. However, David did not choose to be king in the way against God. To David, the most important is not the position of king but God who is the Lord of all things. So he chose to spare Saul, the Lord's anointed even if it meant a big loss to him.

2. May the Lord Judge between you and me.

Look at verse 8. ¡°Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, ¡°My lord the king!¡± When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.¡±

In this part, David reveals his presence to Saul and expressed his honesty and loyalty. It was a big risk for the fugitive to come out of hiding. But David entrusted himself into God¡¯s hands and surrendered himself to Saul because he wanted to show his heart.

In approaching Saul, David was very gracious and humble. He called Saul, ¡°my Lord the king.¡± He didn¡¯t say, ¡°Hey, wicked king!¡± or "Hey, there, bad guy!" David also bowed down and prostrated himself to Saul. David is already anointed as king. God promised him to rule over Israel after Saul. However he did not approach Saul as an equal.

Next, David gave a speech to express his innocence and loyalty. David said he had spared Saul because he was Lord's anointed. David also showed the piece of Saul's robe to prove that he did not have any desire to rebel against Saul. David said, "Now understand and recognize that I am not guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life." This was the desperate self-defence of David for his innocence and honesty.

Now look at verse 12. ¡°May the LORD judge between you and me. And may the LORD avenge the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you.¡± Often we put ourselves in the position of judge when we see others do wrong. We convict them and impose a penalty in our way. But David recognized God as the Judge and left all matters in his hands. God is perfectly righteous. His judgement is always complete. So David gave up taking revenge on his own. Instead of David, God would judge between good and evil, and avenge the wrongs Saul had done to him.

We want to take revenge when we get hurt. We try to pay it back by any means when someone insults us. We want to show our power to those who falsely charges us. However if we try to avenge their wrongdoing in our way, we are likely to be the same as the evildoers. What we have to do in the situation is to follow David's example. Like David, we should believe that God knows everything and judges completely between good and evil. God, the great Judge, will release us from the false charge and punish the evildoers. People say, "vengeance is mine." But the Bible says it belongs to God. I pray that we may believe in God who knows the innocent from the wrongdoers. I pray that we may be freed of all sense of hatred and revenge by believing in the great divine Judge.

3. Saul¡¯s reaction

Saul¡¯s response is seen in the last part of this passage. Saul was moved by David¡¯s mercy and honesty so much that he could not hold back his tears and wept aloud. Saul confessed, ¡°You have treated me well, but I have treated you badly......... You are more righteous than me.¡± Saul's confession reminded us of Joseph's story in Genesis. Joseph did not take revenge on his brothers but forgave them. It moved his brothers and they repent their sins. Roman 12:21 says, "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." David had not heard this verse, but his story of today is a good example to this word.

Finally, Saul looks to the future. He said, "I know you will surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands. Now swear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father¡¯s family.¡± (20 -21). This is the agreement Jonathan and David made previously in chapter 20, so it wasn¡¯t necessary for David to do so all over again, but David gave his oath that he would protect Saul¡¯s family rather than cut them off.

Saul went home after this. But David and his men went up to the stronghold. Saul seemed to repent. But he could change his heart at any time. In the past Saul had shown that he could not be trusted. This is why David and his men continued to live as fugitives in their own country. Repentance is not a snap short in a single moment. It is an on-going event. Repentance is not the emotion of a single moment. It should be demonstrated by the on-going direction in one¡¯s life.

Today, we learned from David what to do under false accusation and how to solve sense of vengeance. David spared Saul¡¯s life even if it prolonged the time as a fugitive. It was because David feared God who anoint Saul as king. Also it was because David believed in God who would judge and revenge instead of him. Truly, this was an act of faith that pleased and honored God. I pray we learn David' faith. I pray we may also overcome evil with good. I pray we may leave our revenge in the hands of God and may keep going on the right way peacefully.
