Words: Luke 1:26-38
Key: Luke 1:32, 33

You are highly favored.

¡°He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end (32, 33).¡±

Today¡¯s message is about the story of Mary, the mother of Jesus, who was engaged to Joseph. What we will pay attention to is Jesus was born through Mary¡¯s obedience. Let¡¯s see how she accepted the angel¡¯s message and humbly obeyed the will of God. The angel evinces who Jesus is and the kingdom of God. Let¡¯s learn about Jesus himself and his eternal kingdom.

Part 1. You who are highly favored (26-30).

Look at verse 26. ¡°In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee¡¦¡± Gabriel went to a small town in Galilee at the point where Elizabeth had been pregnant for six months.
Loot at verse 27. ¡°¡¦to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin¡¯s name was Mary.¡± Mary was a young girl who lived in a small country, Nazareth in Galilee. It was a typical clean and quiet country village. At the entrance of town, there was probably small stream and children play in it whenever summer comes. Perhaps in the daytime, some bulls or cows sound Moooooo on green fields. And at night, from across the rolling hills, you could hear the hoot of owls or frogs. The people who live in this town were pure, intact, and kind. Certainly Mary was the happiest girl among all the others. After being engaged to Joseph, Mary had dreamed the beautiful sweet home living with her fiancé, Joseph, at every night. She drew a picture how many get children, 3 or 4, and on where spend their free time after Sunday worship service. Her sweet dream seemed to last forever and ever and ever.

One day something unusual happened in her life and everything changed. Look at verse 28. An angel came to her and said, ¡°Greeting, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.¡± Mary was greatly troubled at his words. She wondered what kind of greeting this might be (29). If there is the most favor to Mary now, certainly it is her fiancé. Nothing could be a favor more than Joseph himself. Her heart was filled with Joseph, Joseph and Joseph. Mary felt that she was in the same boat with Joseph. She was ready to enjoy the time of the gentle breeze of life as well as overcome the life of the turbulent time together. She didn¡¯t need any more. But Angel interrupted her life of dream. To a young girl, the angel¡¯s message was thunderous.

The angel was sorry that Mary was afraid. But Angel did not hesitate to carry out his given mission. Look at verse 30. ¡°But the angel said to her, ¡®Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God.¡¯¡± We can advertently guess this angel¡¯s statement did not help Mary not be afraid. Perhaps, Mary got even more afraid. It is because that angel explained how God¡¯s favor would happen for Marry. Look at verse 30. ¡°You will be with child and give birth to a son.¡¦¡± Oh, my God~! Mary was virgin. She was not touched by Men, even Joseph. But she was supposed to be pregnant and give birth to a baby. It means that her sweet dream disappears in a whirl of wind.

Secular Christians think that to be favored by God is to receive a full of human blessings. However, we should esteem how Bible sees the concept ¡°God¡¯s favor¡±. The Greek word for favor, ¡°charis¡±, has the same meaning as a series of words such as, ¡°beauty, delight, gratification, or geniality.¡± Some people might think that they owe a favor because God gave material blessings. These are clearly favors but small and cheap in the view of Bible. There are bigger and more expensive graces God shows to us. In Romans 1:5, ¡°Through him and for his name¡¯s sake, we received grace and apostleship¡¦¡± Paul sees that God grace mainly include two things; ¡®salvation¡¯ which was from Jesus¡¯ cross and ¡®mission¡¯ God allowed to us. Mary had two things in one box. A blessing Mary received is to take part in the apex of God¡¯s salvation work; i.e., the birth of Jesus our savior. She would be the mother of our Lord. Through her womb, Jesus came into this earth and did his mission toward us. This is an indescribable blessing. It is an unfathomable grace given to Mary alone. Of course, she had to sacrifice herself for God¡¯s special favor. Owing to this, Joseph hesitated to marry Mary once. She denied her dream about sweet home. She suffered a lot of pain when Jesus bled to death. However, these aches cannot help but deepen the depth of her given grace.

Do you happen to know who Nick Vujicic is? He is a preacher and inspirational speaker born in Brinsbane, Australia. He graduated from university at the age of 21 with a double major in Accounting and Financial Planning. Having addressed over three million people in over 24 countries on five continents, he speaks to corporate audiences and schools. However, he came into the world with neither arms nor legs. He only has a head and a body, a torso. When he came out, peers felt greatly shock. So he tried to struggle with depression and loneliness at a young age. He constantly questioned why he was different than all other kids surrounding him; why he was born without arms and legs. He confessed that he was seduced to kill himself from time to time. However, he sought these answer by the faith in God. He accepted special God¡¯s purpose toward his life. He gave himself to God for using his massive disability to touch wounded souls and bring the hope of Jesus Christ to people across the globe. Now so many different nation people get encouraged by his preach and find the purpose of life in God. Likewise we are different from others who around us. We are called as Campus student shepherd. It is hard for us to live like other people in the secular world. According to today¡¯s message, I acknowledge that it is the greatest grace among what I have ever had in my life. Praise the Lord who mold our life like Mary and bless us fully.

Part 2. Jesus¡¯ eternal kingdom of God (31-38).

In verses 31-33, the angel continues to speak his message to Mary so that she may know who Jesus is and that absolute obedience could come from her soul. In his message, the angel introduces first, who Jesus is, for Mary needed this knowledge of Jesus in order to carry out God's grace and mission. Look at verse 32a. "He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High." Kings and nations rise and wane. They are like grass and flowers (Isa 40:6-8). But Jesus is the one and only Son of Almighty God. Jesus is the Son of the Ruler of history, and his kingdom is forever. Our God is the only living God and he rules world history according to his time schedule. Our God is Spirit and he is immortal. Therefore, Jesus is great because he is the Son of God.

Look at verse 32b. "The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David..." God promised David that from his root the Messiah would come (2Sa 7:12). David was the shadow of Jesus, the King of love and peace. Kings of the world live for a brief time and die. But Jesus became the eternal King. Our eternal King Jesus destroyed the power of sin and death. Thus he became our eternal king. Our eternal King gives eternal salvation from sin, eternal life and the kingdom of God to those who believe in him.

Finally, Gabriel talks to Mary about the kingdom of God. Look at verse 33. "...and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." The prophet Daniel wrote in his apocalyptic prophecy concerning the eternal kingdom of Jesus our Lord (Da 2:35;44-45). The kings and kingdoms of the world are temporal, for they are like pieces of wood, clay, bronze, iron, and so on. There is nothing eternal in this world. This universal truth has been the agony of kings in history who wanted to keep their kingdoms forever. The kingdoms of the world all crumble like iron eaten by rust. Only the kingdom of Jesus is forever. England grew as such a glorious kingdom with so many colonies that the people renamed this nation, "The United Kingdom." But now, English people do not know whether they should call their country the United Kingdom or England. Only the kingdom of Jesus is forever. The kingdom of God is our final destination. When we have faith in the kingdom of God, we can have the peace of God in our hearts and live as holy pilgrims.

What was Mary's response? After being convinced, Mary's soul inclined to hear the angel's message. But Mary had a scientific question. Look at verse 34. "'How will this be,' Mary asked the angel, 'since I am a virgin?'" Mary was not negative. Her question shows a positive response. The angel taught her in verse 35: "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you." When the angel expounded that Mary's pregnancy was not an accident, but was precisely the work of the Holy Spirit, Mary accepted the angel's message. The angel continued: "Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God" (36,37). The angel convinced Mary that nothing is impossible with God.

Mary realized that her destiny was absolutely in the hand of God. She also realized that even if she had rejected God's plan, God would carry it out anyway. She could have been very rebellious and rejected the angel's message, but Mary decided to obey. Look at verse 38. "'I am the Lord's servant,' Mary answered. 'May it be to me as you have said.' Then the angel left her." When Mary said this, she was not speaking from her emotions, or with blind resignation to fate; she said this on the basis of God's promise.

When I heard the news my wife become pregnant, I tried to hide anxious feelings because she also was upset about it. It happened in around the Christmas season in last year. Actually, I was not able to enjoy such the most enjoyable time in a year due to anxiety over our future. I wanted to be together with my wife for as long as possible. I could not understand why something happened we did not plan at all. Mother-in-law also was little upset about this unexpected event. She might be mindful of what I was mindful; that is the baby could prevent me from studying Ph.D. Shepherd Cheolhan Park pointed once before, ¡°if you have a baby, your life will fade away.¡± I also knew how he had had a hard time for his baby in spite of his fatherly love and commitment. I was afraid of having a baby. I wanted to get him or her after being permitted by any Ph.D. School in U.S. However, this selfishness saddened my wife that she quietly showed tear at the Christmas night. Perhaps she felt lonely in front of the big event of our life. So I prayed that ¡®Father let me know the will you set for us¡¯. Afterward, I read the bible in Luke today¡¯s passage. I see Mary who humbly say, ¡°I am the Lord¡¯s servant¡±, ¡°May it be to me as you have said.¡± I was deeply moved by this word. I repented my selfishness firstly and pray for giving humble heart as Mary had. At last, I repeated angel¡¯s greeting, ¡°You are highly favored¡± ¡°You are highly favored¡±. Then, my empty heart was filled with pleasure, satisfaction, and gratitude. In doing so, I was able to fully bless the baby in my wife womb. I pray for him to be like Jesus who saved this world. And I thank God who gave me a baby as a Christmas gift lately. Praise the Lord who is good all the time.

In order to send Jesus into the world, God had to choose a woman to be his mother. Of all women, God chose Mary--a woman pledged to be married. Why? Was it because she looked so beautiful, like the picture of Mona Lisa? No. God chose her simply because she loved God and was happy to obey God's word absolutely. An obedient woman may be the symbol of a mother. So Mary was the most proper person to be the mother of Jesus. One woman's obedience to God is truly great. May God bless Korean women to be as obedient as Mary.
