To Inherit Eternal Life (¿µ»ýÀ» ¾òÀ¸·Á¸é) Luke 18:18-30 (´©°¡º¹À½ 18:18-30) Key Verse : Luke 18:22 (´©°¡º¹À½ 18:22) When Jesus heard this, he said to him, "You still lack one thing. In Lord¡¯s Prayer, Jesus prays that thy kingdom come and thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. When the kingdom of God dwells in our hearts, we can have the eternal life. Jesus proclaims ¡°Repent and believe. The kingdom of God is near.¡± Therefore, it is Jesus¡¯ belief that when the kingdom of God dwells in our hearts, we can have eternal life. The kingdom of God is the place where our God rules with his justice. In today's passage, a rich young ruler comes to Jesus to ask how to inherit eternal life. This ruler must be a noble man, since he already possesses the ruling position in his society. But it is not enough for him since he suffers from the fear of death. So he wants to inherit eternal life. Let¡¯s listen to Jesus with ears to hear and hearts to receive the words that show us the way to eternal life. ¿ì¸®°¡ ¾î¶»°Ô ¿µ»ýÀ» ¾òÀ» ¼ö ÀÖ½À´Ï±î? A certain man came to Jesus. This man was young (Mt 19:20) and rich. And he was a ruler. We see that this man was able, well disciplined, hard-working, and a pious individual. He must have been a man of standing and success. He had everything a person would want, wealth, power and success. But he still had one problem. He came to Jesus with a serious problem and asked, ¡°¡¦what must I do to inherit eternal life?¡± Here, we see his serious problem. His problem was whether he was good enough to enter the kingdom of God. There are many who struggle with this same problem. They have wealth, power and honor but are not satisfied, hopeless, and miserable in life. People are in this condition because they don¡¯t have eternal life or the kingdom of God in their lives. ¾î¶² »ç¶÷ÀÌ ¿¹¼ö´Ô²² ¿Ô½À´Ï´Ù. Jesus immediately understood that this young man did not have God in his heart, so he says to him, ¡°Why do you call me good? No one is good—except God alone.¡± (19) This young man¡¯s concept of good was based on human relativism. This man probably thought that Jesus was good because served many needy people, and he himself was good because he was wealthy and pious. He regarded his life as God¡¯s blessing. The Bible is clear that no one is good before God. Apostle Paul understood this when he said, ¡°There is no one righteous, not even one¡¦there is no one who does good, not even one¡¦for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God¡±(Ro 3:10, 12b, 23). Jesus taught that only God is good. ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀº ÀÌ Ã»³âÀÌ ±×ÀÇ ¸¶À½ ¼Ó¿¡ Çϳª´ÔÀÌ ¾øÀ½À» Áï½Ã ¾Æ½Ã°í ±×¿¡°Ô ¸»¾¸Çϼ̽À´Ï´Ù. ¡°³×°¡ ¾îÂîÇÏ¿© ³ª¸¦ ¼±ÇÏ´Ù ÀÏÄ´À³Ä? We must learn God¡¯s standard of goodness. Jesus continues, ¡°You know the commandments: ¡®Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.¡¯¡± It is interesting that Jesus shared only these commandments that deal with loving others. Jesus did not mention the first four commandments that deal with loving God. Also, Jesus left out the commandment that deals with ¡°do not covet¡±. Jesus mentioned these commandments because the old covenant promised eternal life based on obedience to the law of God (Lev 18:5). Jesus was helping the man to change his concept of good through obedience to the law. There was no way he could attain God¡¯s standard of good; thus, by his works he could not inherit eternal life. ¿ì¸®´Â Çϳª´ÔÀÇ ¼±ÀÇ ±âÁØÀ» ¹è¿ö¾ß ÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀº °è¼ÓÇؼ ¸»¾¸Çϼ̽À´Ï´Ù. ¡°³×°¡ °è¸íÀ» ¾Æ³ª´Ï °£À½ÇÏÁö ¸»¶ó, »ìÀÎÇÏÁö ¸»¶ó, µµµÏÁúÇÏÁö ¸»¶ó, °ÅÁþ Áõ¾ð ÇÏÁö ¸»¶ó, ³× ºÎ¸ð¸¦ °ø°æÇ϶ó ÇÏ¿´´À´Ï¶ó¡± ¿¹¼ö´Ô²²¼ ´Ù¸¥ »ç¶÷À» »ç¶ûÇÏ´Â °Í°ú °ü·ÃµÈ ÀÌ °è¸íµé¸¸À» ³ª´©½Å Á¡ÀÌ Èï¹Ì·Ó½À´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀº Çϳª´ÔÀ» »ç¶ûÇÏ´Â °Í°ú °ü·ÃµÈ óÀ½ ³× °è¸íÀº ¾ð±ÞÇÏÁö ¾ÊÀ¸¼Ì½À´Ï´Ù. ¶ÇÇÑ ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀº ¡®Å½³»Áö ¸»¶ó¡¯¿Í °ü·ÃµÈ °è¸íµµ ³²°Ü µÎ¾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀº ¿¾ ¾ð¾àÀº Çϳª´ÔÀÇ À²¹ý¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ¼øÁ¾¿¡ ±Ù°ÅÇÑ ¿µ»ýÀ» ¾à¼ÓÇÏ°í Àֱ⠶§¹®¿¡ ÀÌ °è¸íµéÀ» ¾ð±ÞÇϼ̽À´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀº ÀÌ »ç¶÷ÀÌ À²¹ý¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ¼øÁ¾À» ÅëÇØ ¾ò°Ô µÇ´Â ¼±ÀÇ °³³äÀ» ¹Ù²Ùµµ·Ï µµ¿ÍÁּ̽À´Ï´Ù. ±×´Â Çϳª´ÔÀÇ ¼±ÀÇ ±âÁØÀ» ¸¸Á·½Ãų ¼ö ¾ø¾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ±×·¯¹Ç·Î ±×°¡ ÀÚ±â ÇàÀ§·Î ¿µ»ýÀ» ¾òÀ» ¼ö´Â ¾ø¾ú½À´Ï´Ù. How did this man respond? Look at verse 21, ¡°All these I have kept since I was a boy.¡± How could he say this? He thought this way because of his superficial understanding of the law of God, like many Jews of his time. He thought this because he did not murder anyone, rob a bank, but took good care of his parents, and was a pretty honest guy. But his understanding of the law of God was shallow. He did not know that looking at a woman lustfully was committing adultery in his heart (Mt 5:28). He did not understand that hatred and anger is similar to the sin of murder by God¡¯s standard (Mt 5:22). This man disregarded motive in practicing the law. He is like some students who decline Bible study, saying, ¡°I am okay,¡± or ¡°It¡¯s alright, I¡¯m good,¡± without any deep thought. Out of Jesus¡¯ love for this young man, Jesus helped him to have eternal life. Let¡¯s read verse 22, ¡°You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.¡± Here Jesus exposes the young man¡¯s problem. What is the man¡¯s problem? For one thing, the young man loved wealth. He depended on it for security and happiness. He loved it more than God. Money was his idol. Another problem this young man had was that he was selfish. He did not care for the poor. In Jesus¡¯ time, many people were too poor to afford three meals a day. The ruler¡¯s accumulation of great wealth in the midst of the suffering majority of his people reveals that he was selfish and greedy. Let¡¯s think more about how Jesus helped this man have eternal life. Look at verse 22 again, ¡°You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.¡± Jesus helps this man do two things: First, he helps the man to repent and love God first. Jesus told the rich young ruler to sell everything and give it to the poor. Jesus did not command him to ¡®sell some of what you have,¡¯ but sell everything. Jesus told him to sell everything because money had been the man¡¯s idol. Money was the object of his happiness and worship. Since money was at the center of his hearts attention, he became selfish and self-centered. His love of money broke his relationship with God and men. Jesus command to sell everything and give to the poor was to help the man to repent and have a right relationship with God. He wanted the young man to be rich in God¡¯s love. ¡®¿¹¼ö´Ô²²¼ ¾î¶»°Ô ÀÌ »ç¶÷ÀÌ ¿µ»ý ¾òµµ·Ï µµ¿ì¼Ì´Â°¡¡¯¿¡ ´ëÇØ ´õ »ý°¢ÇØ º¾½Ã´Ù. 22ÀýÀ» ´Ù½Ã º¸½Ê½Ã¿À. ¡°³×°Ô ¾ÆÁ÷µµ ÇÑ °¡Áö ºÎÁ·ÇÑ °ÍÀÌ ÀÖÀ¸´Ï ³×°Ô ÀÖ´Â °ÍÀ» ´Ù ÆÈ¾Æ °¡³ÇÑ Àڵ鿡°Ô ³ª´² ÁÖ¶ó ±×¸®Çϸé Çϴÿ¡¼ ³×°Ô º¸È°¡ ÀÖÀ¸¸®¶ó ±×¸®°í ¿Í¼ ³ª¸¦ µû¸£¶ó¡± ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀº ÀÌ »ç¶÷¿¡°Ô µÎ °¡Áö¸¦ Çϵµ·Ï µµ¿ì½Ê´Ï´Ù. ù°·Î ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀº ±×°¡ ȸ°³ÇÏ°í ¸ÕÀú Çϳª´ÔÀ» »ç¶ûÇϵµ·Ï µµ¿ì½Ê´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀº ºÎÀÚ Ã»³â¿¡°Ô ¸ðµç °ÍÀ» ´Ù ÆȾƼ °¡³ÇÑ Àڵ鿡°Ô ÁÖ¶ó°í ¸»¾¸Çϼ̽À´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀº °¡Áø °ÍÀÇ ÀϺθ¦ Æȶó°í ¸íÇÏÁö ¾ÊÀ¸½Ã°í ¸ðµç °ÍÀ» Æȶó°í Çϼ̽À´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀº µ·ÀÌ ±×ÀÇ ¿ì»óÀ̾ú±â ¶§¹®¿¡ ±×¿¡°Ô ¸ðµç °ÍÀ» Æȶó°í ¸»¾¸Çϼ̽À´Ï´Ù. µ·Àº ±×ÀÇ Çູ°ú °æ¹èÀÇ ¸ñÀûÀ̾ú½À´Ï´Ù. µ·ÀÌ ±×ÀÇ ¸¶À½ Á߽ɿ¡ ÀÖ¾ú±â ¶§¹®¿¡ ±×´Â À̱âÀûÀÌ µÇ°í ÀÚ±âÁß½ÉÀûÀÌ µÇ¾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ±×ÀÇ µ·¿¡ ´ëÇÑ »ç¶ûÀº ±×¿Í Çϳª´Ô°ú »ç¶÷ »çÀÌÀÇ °ü°è¸¦ ±ú¶ß·È½À´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀÌ ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀÌ ¸ðµç °ÍÀ» ÆÈ¾Æ °¡³ÇÑ Àڵ鿡°Ô ÁÖ¶ó ¸íÇϽŠ°ÍÀº ±×°¡ ȸ°³ÇÏ°í Çϳª´ÔÀÇ ¹Ù¸¥ °ü°è¼ºÀ» ¸Îµµ·Ï µµ¿ì½Å °ÍÀ̾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀº ±× û³âÀÌ Çϳª´ÔÀÇ »ç¶û ¾È¿¡¼ ºÎ¿äÇÑ ÀÚ°¡ µÇ±æ ¿øÇϼ̽À´Ï´Ù. Second, he invites the man to follow him. This was Jesus¡¯ invitation for salvation. This was Jesus¡¯ call to renew his love relationship with God. This was an invitation to receive the kingdom of God in his life and have the eternal riches. In the end, it was an invitation to a new lifestyle with God as the center of his life. What did it mean for this man to follow Jesus? For one thing, it meant for this young man to make Jesus King over his life. To make Jesus King over his life, he had to replace money, at the center of his heart, with Jesus. He also had to change his life¡¯s value system. He had to make Jesus first priority in his life. Apostle Paul said, ¡°What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ¡± (Php 3:8). Every Christian who makes a commitment to Christ must make him King over his or her life, or else, they will soon follow another king. A second thing it meant for this young man was to follow Jesus as a disciple. As Jesus¡¯ disciple, he would learn who Jesus really is, and learn how to deny himself and serve God¡¯s will. Following Jesus as his disciple, the young man could turn from his self-centered life and grow to love others and serve them. How can we follow Jesus? Mark 8:34 says, ¡°If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.¡± We can follow Jesus when we learn to deny ourselves. Of course, to deny ourselves does not necessarily to sell everything. To deny ourselves is really to release our egos, our worldly ambition, and our own earthly value system. We can follow Jesus when we take up our crosses. When we take up our crosses, we learn to deny our self-centeredness and learn to love and serve others with Jesus¡¯ compassion and heart for the lost. To take up our crosses require humility, submission, and obedience unto death. Jesus promised that if we lose our lives for Jesus and the gospel will truly save it. Let¡¯s see what the man¡¯s response to Jesus¡¯ call was. Let¡¯s look at verse 23, ¡°When he heard this, he became very sad¡¦¡± Upon hearing this, he became sad and left. This may be the only man in the gospels who came to the feet of Jesus and went away in worse condition then when he first came. He was moral, religious, earnest and sincere. Yet, he refused to follow the Christ. ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀÇ ºÎ¸£½É¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ±× »ç¶÷ÀÇ ¹ÝÀÀÀÌ ¹«¾ùÀÎÁö º¾½Ã´Ù. 23ÀýÀ» º¸½Ê½Ã¿À. ¡°±× »ç¶÷ÀÌ Å« ºÎÀÚÀ̹ǷΠÀÌ ¸»¾¸À» µè°í ½ÉÈ÷ ±Ù½ÉÇÏ´õ¶ó¡± ÀÌ°ÍÀ» µéÀ¸¸é¼ ±×´Â ½½ÆÛÇÏ¸é¼ ¶°³ª°¬½À´Ï´Ù. Today, there are many idols in this world, not only money. There are idols of sports, technology, human recognition, materialism, lust and selfish ambition. These block people's hearts from knowing and loving God. Idols make us slaves and give us agony to our souls. We must hear Jesus¡¯ voice to sell everything and follow him. This is his call to us to repent and have eternal life through a personal relationship with Christ. It is an invitation to discipleship and a new and fruitful life in Christ. We no longer have to live in agony or slavery when we follow Jesus. We can live in true joy, peace and love, while having eternal treasures in heaven. May the Spirit guide us not to be sad at Jesus¡¯ words, but to joyfully follow him. May the Spirit guide us to release our egos, ambitions, and idols so that we may experience the love of God and store up treasures in heaven. ¿À´Ã³¯ ¼¼»ó¿¡´Â µ· »Ó¸¸ ¾Æ´Ï¶ó ¸¹Àº ¿ì»óµéÀÌ ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù. ½ºÆ÷Ã÷, ±â¼ú, »ç¶ûµéÀÇ ÀÎÁ¤, ¹°ÁúÁÖÀÇ, Á¤¿å ±×¸®°í À̱âÀûÀÎ ¾ß¸ÁÀ̶õ ¿ì»óµéÀÌ ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù. The disciples were shocked to hear Jesus¡¯ words to the rich young ruler. In their amazement, they asked, ¡°Who then can be saved?¡± Jesus replied, ¡°What is impossible with men is possible with God.¡± Jesus¡¯ answer reminded them that salvation comes only from God. Peter and the other disciples remembered that they were not like the rich young ruler. They all made decisions of faith to leave everything and follow Jesus. So Peter exclaimed, ¡°We have left all we had to follow you!¡± Jesus replied, ¡°I tell you the truth, no one who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God will fail to receive many times as much in this age and, in the age to come, eternal life¡± (29-30). Jesus deeply acknowledged their sacrifices. Jesus also promised them blessings that would overflow. He confirmed that they would receive God¡¯s provisions for leaving everything behind. Most importantly, Jesus acknowledged that the disciples would have eternal life and true riches in heaven for their decision.
