왜 예배 시간을 지켜야 하나요
 여우가 나타난 것은 바로 그때였다. "안녕." 여우가 말했다. "안녕." 어린 왕자가 얌전히 대답하고 몸을 돌렸으나 아무것도 보이지 않았다. "난 여기 사과나무 밑에 있어." 좀 전의 그 목소리가 말했다. "넌 누구지? 넌 참 예쁘구나." 어린 왕자가 말했다. "난 여우야." 여우는 말했다. "이라 와서 나하고 놀자. 난 아주 슬프단다." 어린 왕자가 제의했다. "난 너하고 놀 수 없어. 나는 길들어져 있지 않거든." 여우가 말했다. "아! 미안해." 어린 왕자가 말했다. 그러나 잠깐 생각해 본 후에 어린 왕자는 다시 말했다. "길들여진다는 게 뭐지?" "너는 여기 사는 애가 아니구나. 넌 무얼 찾고 있니?" 여우가 물었다. "난 사람을 찾고 있어." 어린 왕자가 말했다. "길들인다는 게 뭐지?" "사람들은 소총을 가지고 있고 사냥을 하지. 그게 참 곤란한 일이야. 그들은 병아리들도 길러. 그것이 그들의 유일한 낙이야. 너 병아리를 찾니?" 여우가 물었다. "아니야. 난 친구들을 찾고 있어. 길들인다는 게 뭐지?" 어린 왕자가 말했다. "그건 너무 잘 잊혀지고 있는 거지. 그건 '관계를 맺는다'는 뜻이야." 여우가 말했다. "관계를 맺는다고?" "그래." 여우가 말했다. "넌 아직은 나에겐 수많은 다른 소년들과 다를 바 없는 한 소년에 지나지 않아. 그래서 난 너를 필요로 하지 않고. 너 역시 마찬가지 일거야. 난 너에겐 수많은 다른 여우와 똑같은 한 마리 여우에 지나지 않아. 하지만 네가 나를 길들인다면 나는 너에겐 이 세상에 오직 하나밖에 없는 존재가 될 거야." "무슨 말인지 조금 이해가 가." 어린 왕자가 말했다. "꽃 한 송이가 있는데...... 그 꽃이 나를 길들인 걸꺼야......" "그럴지도 모르지." 여우가 말했다. "지구에는 온갖 것들이 다 있으니까......" "아, 아니야! 그건 지구에서가 아니야." 어린 왕자가 말했다. 여우는 몹시 궁금한 눈치였다. "그럼 다른 별에서?" "그래." "그 별에도 사냥꾼들이 있니?" "아니 없어." "그거 참 이상하군! 그럼 병아리는?" "없어." "이 세상엔 완전한 데라곤 없군." 여유는 한숨을 내쉬었다. 그러나 여우는 하던 이야기로 다시 말머리를 돌렸다. "내 생활은 너무 단조롭단다. 나는 병아리를 쫓고 사람들은 나를 쫓지. 병아리들은 모두 똑같고 사람들도 모두 똑같아. 그래서 난 좀 심심해. 하지만 네가 나를 길들인다면 내 생활은 환하게 밝아질 꺼야. 다른 모든 발자국 소리와 구별되는 발자국 소리를 나는 알게 되겠지. 다른 발자국 소리들은 나를 땅 밑으로 기어 들어가게 만들 테지만 너의 발자국 소리는 땅 밑 굴에서 음악소리처럼 나를 밖으로 불러낼 꺼야! 그리고 저길 봐! 저기 밀밭이 보이지! 난 빵은 먹지 않아. 밀은 내겐 아무 소용이 없는 거야. 밀밭은 나에게 아무것도 생각나게 하지 않아. 그건 서글픈 일이지! 그런데 너는 금빛 머리칼을 가졌어. 그러니 네가 나를 길들인다면 정말 근사할 거야! 밀은 금빛이니까 나에게 너를 생각나게 할거거든. 그럼 난 밀밭 사이를 스치는 바람 소리를 사랑하게 될 거야......" 여우는 입을 다물고 어린 왕자를 오랫동안 쳐다보더니 "부탁이야...... 나를 길들여 줘!" 하고 말했다. "그래, 나도 그러고 싶어. 하지만 내겐 시간이 많지 않아. 친구들을 찾아내야 하고 알아볼 일도 많아." 어린 왕자는 대답했다. "우린 우리가 길들이는 것만을 알 수 있는 거란다." 여우가 말했다. "사람들은 이제 아무것도 알 시간이 없어졌어. 그들은 가게에서 이미 만들어져 있는 것들을 사거든. 그런데 친구를 파는 가게는 없으니까 사람들은 이제 친구가 없는 거지. 친구를 가지고 싶다면 나를 길들이렴." "그럼 어떻게 해야 하는 거지?" 어린 왕자가 물었다. "참을성이 있어야 해." 여우가 대답했다. "우선 내게서 좀 멀어져서 이렇게 풀숲에 앉아 있어. 난 너를 곁눈질해 볼 꺼야. 넌 아무 말도 하지 말아. 말은 오해의 근원이지. 날마다 넌 조금씩 더 가까이 다가앉을 수 있게 될 거야......" 다음 날 어린 왕자는 다시 그리로 갔다. "언제나 같은 시각에 오는 게 더 좋을 거야." 여우가 말했다. "이를테면, 네가 오후 네 시에 온다면 난 세시부터 행복해지기 시작할거야. 시간이 흐를수록 난 점점 더 행복해지겠지. 네 시에는 흥분해서 안절부절 못할 거야. 그래서 행복이 얼마나 값진 것인가 알게 되겠지! 아무 때나 오면 몇 시에 마음을 곱게 단장을 해야 하는지 모르잖아. 올바른 의식이 필요하거든." "의식이 뭐야?" 어린 왕자가 물었다. "그것도 너무 자주 잊혀지는 거야. 그건 어느 하루를 다른 날들과 다르게 만들고, 어느 한 시간을 다른 시간들과 다르게 만드는 거지. 예를 들면 내가 아는 사냥꾼들에게도 의식이 있어. 그들은 목요일이면 마을의 처녀들과 춤을 추지. 그래서 목요일은 내게 있어 신나는 날이지! 난 포도밭까지 산보를 가고, 사냥꾼들이 아무 때나 춤을 추면, 하루하루가 모두 똑같이 되어 버리잖아. 그럼 난 하루도 휴가가 없게 될 거고......" 여우가 말했다. 그래서 어린 왕자는 여우를 길들였다. 출발의 시간이 다가왔을 때 여우는 말했다. "아아! 난 울 것만 같아." "그건 네 잘못이야. 나는 너의 마음을 아프게 하고 싶지 않았어. 하지만 내가 널 길들여 주길 네가 원했잖아......" 어린 왕자가 말했다. "그건 그래." 여우가 말했다. "그런데 넌 울려고 그러잖아!" 어린 왕자가 말했다. "그래, 정말 그래." 여우가 말했다. "그러니 넌 이익 본 게 아무것도 없잖아!" "이익 본 게 있지. 밀밭의 색깔 때문에 말야." 여우가 말했다. 잠시 후 그가 다시 말을 이었다. "장미꽃들을 다시 가서 봐. 너는 너의 장미꽃이 이 세상에 오직 하나뿐이라는 걸 깨닫게 될 거야. 그리고 내게 돌아와서 작별 인사를 해줘. 그러면 내가 네게 한 가지 비밀을 선물할게." 어린 왕자는 장미꽃을 보러갔다. "너희들은 나의 장미와 조금도 닮지 않았어. 너희들은 아직 아무것도 아니야." 그들에게 그는 말했다. "아무도 너희들을 길들이지 않았고 너희들 역시 아무도 길들이지 않았어. 너희들은 예전의 내 여우와 같아. 그는 수많은 다른 여우들과 똑같은 여우일 뿐이었어. 하지만 내가 그를 친구로 만들었기 때문에 그는 이제 이 세상에 단 하나뿐인 여우야." 그러자 장미꽃들은 굉장히 당황했다. "너희들은 아름답지만 텅 비어있어." 그가 계속 말을 했다. "누가 너희들을 위해서 죽을 수 없을 테니까. 물론 나의 꽃은 지나가는 행인에겐 너희들과 똑같이 생긴 것으로 보이겠지. 하지만 그 꽃 한 송이가 내게는 너희들 모두보다도 더 중요해. 내가 그에게 물을 주었지 때문이지. 유리 덮개로 보호해 준 것도 꽃이기 때문이야. 내가 벌레를 잡아 준 것(나비 때문에 두 세 마리 남겨둔 것말고)도 그 꽃이기 때문이야. 불평을 하거나 자랑을 늘어놓는 것도, 때로는 말없이 침묵을 지키는 것도 귀기울여 들어준 꽃이기 때문이지. 그건 내 장미꽃이기 때문이야." 그리고 그는 여우에게 돌아갔다. "잘 있어." 어린 왕자가 말했다. "잘 가." 여우가 말했다. "내 비밀은 이런 거야. 아주 간단해. 오로지 마음으로만 보아야 잘 보인다는 거야. 가장 중요한 건 눈에 보이지 않는단다." "가장 중요한 건 눈에 보이지 않는단다." 잘 기억하기 위해서 어린 왕자가 되뇌었다. "네 장미꽃을 그토록 소중하게 만드는 건 그 꽃을 위해 네가 소비한 그 시간이란다." "......내가 내 장미꽃을 위해 소비한 시간이란다......" 잘 기억하기 위해 어린 왕자가 따라 말했다. "사람들은 이런 진리를 잊어버렸어. 하지만 넌 그것을 잊어선 안 돼. 네가 길들인 것에 언제까지나 책임이 있어. 넌 네 장미에 대한 책임이 있어......" "나는 장미에 대해 책임이 있어......" 잘 기억하기 위해 어린 왕자는 되뇌었다. 21 It was then that the fox appeared. "Good morning," said the fox. "To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hu ndred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world..." "I am beginning to understand," said the little prince. "There is a flower... I think that she has tamed me..." "It is possible," said the fox. "On the Earth one sees all sorts of things." "Oh, but this is not on the Earth!" said the little prince. The fox seemed perplexed, and very curious. "On another planet?" "Yes." "Are there hunters on this planet?" "No." "Ah, that is interesting! Are there chickens?" "No." "Nothing is perfect," sighed the fox. But he came back to his idea. "My life is very monotonous," the fox said. "I hunt chickens; men hunt me. All the chickens are just alike, and all the men are just alike. And, in consequence, I am a little bored. But if you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life . I shall know the sound of a step that will be different from all the others. Other steps send me hurrying back underneath the ground. Yours will call me, like music, out of my burrow. And then look: you see the grain-fields down yonder? I do not ea t bread. Wheat is of no use to me. The wheat fields have nothing to say to me. And that is sad. But you have hair that is the colour of gold. Think how wonderful that will be when you have tamed me! The grain, which is also golden, will bring me bac k the thought of you. And I shall love to listen to the wind in the wheat..." The fox gazed at the little prince, for a long time. "Please-- tame me!" he said. "I want to, very much," the little prince replied. "But I have not much time. I have friends to discover, and a great many things to understand." "One only understands the things that one tames," said the fox. "Men have no more time to understand anything. They buy things all ready made at the shops. But there is no shop anywhere where one can buy friendship, and so men have no friends any more . If you want a friend, tame me..." "What must I do, to tame you?" asked the little prince. "You must be very patient," replied the fox. "First you will sit down at a little distance from me-- like that-- in the grass. I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing. Words are the source of misunderstandings. But yo u will sit a little closer to me, every day..." The next day the little prince came back. "It would have been better to come back at the same hour," said the fox. "If, for example, you come at four o'clock in the afternoon, then at three o'clock I shall begin to be happy. I shall feel happier and happier as the hour advances. At four o'cloc k, I shall already be worrying and jumping about. I shall show you how happy I am! But if you come at just any time, I shall never know at what hour my heart is to be ready to greet you... One must observe the proper rites..." "What is a rite?" asked the little prince. "Those also are actions too often neglected," said the fox. "They are what make one day different from other days, one hour from other hours. There is a rite, for example, among my hunters. Every Thursday they dance with the village girls. So Thursday is a wonderful day for me! I can take a walk as far as the vineyards. But if the hunters danced at just any time, every day would be like every other day, and I should never have any vacation at all." So the little prince tamed the fox. And when the hour of his departure drew near-- "Ah," said the fox, "I shall cry." "It is your own fault," said the little prince. "I never wished you any sort of harm; but you wanted me to tame you..." "Yes, that is so," said the fox. "But now you are going to cry!" said the little prince. "Yes, that is so," said the fox. "Then it has done you no good at all!" "It has done me good," said the fox, "because of the color of the wheat fields." And then he added: "Go and look again at the roses. You will understand now that yours is unique in all the world. Then come back to say goodbye to me, and I will make you a present of a secret." The little prince went away, to look again at the roses. "You are not at all like my rose," he said. "As yet you are nothing. No one has tamed you, and you have tamed no one. You are like my fox when I first knew him. He was only a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But I have made him my friend, and now he is unique in all the world." And the roses were very much embarrassed. "You are beautiful, but you are empty," he went on. "One could not die for you. To be sure, an ordinary passerby would think that my rose looked just like you-- the rose that belongs to me. But in herself alone she is more important than all the hundre ds of you other roses: because it is she that I have watered; because it is she that I have put under the glass globe; because it is she that I have sheltered behind the screen; because it is for her that I have killed the caterpillars (except the two or three that we saved to become butterflies); because it is she that I have listened to, when she grumbled, or boasted, or even sometimes when she said nothing. Because she is my rose. And he went back to meet the fox. "Goodbye," he said. "Goodbye," said the fox. "And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."
