 2011년 8월 6일 4대 UBF 세계대표 취임사 "우리 주 예수 그리스도의 은혜를 너희가 알거니와 부요하신 이로서 너희를 위하여 가난하게 되심은 그의 가난함으로 말미암아 너희를 부요하게 하려 하심이라"(고린도후서 8:9) 저는 4대 UBF 세계대표의 부르심을 받고 이 자리에 섰습니다. 저는 하나님의 은혜와 모든 UBF 동역자님들에게 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 또한 전요한 선교사님이 지난 5년 반 동안의 세계대표로서 열심으로 일해오신 것에 감사드립니다. 전요한 선교사님은 일선에 있는 선교사님들을 섬기셨고 미국과 유럽의 크리스챤 공동체들과 친밀한 관계성을 세우셨습니다. 하나님께서 계속하여 전요한, 전선지 선교사님의 섬김과 헌신을 축복해주시길 기도합니다. 하나님은 UBF 50주년을 기념하여, 하나님의 종 고 이사무엘 선교사님과 머더 배리 선교사님을 통해서 우리에 영적 유산을 주셨음을 돌아보게 하셨습니다. 처음부터 하나님은 제자양성을 통한 세계 선교를 섬기도록 UBF를 이끄셨습니다. 우리는 우리의 젊음과 꿈과 열정을 드려서 이 사명에 순종했습니다. 1,800여 명의 선교사님들이 본국의 편안한 삶을 포기하고 92개국으로 파송되었습니다. 많은 분들이 자비량으로 개척하기 위해서 가난, 문화와 언어 장벽, 핍박, 고난을 견디었습니다. 하나님은 전 세계 가운데 400 UBF 지부들 가운데 수 천명의 현지인 제자들, 2세 선교사들을 양성하도록 축복하셨습니다. 우리를 왕 같은 제사장, 거룩한 나라로 부르시고 50 년 동안 놀라운 일을 행하신 하나님께 찬송을 드립니다! 이제 우리 앞에는 UBF 선교사를 기다리는 140여 개의 나라가 있습니다. 미국과 독일의 주요 대학 20%에 우리 선교사들이 있습니다. 이제는 새로운 마음으로 겸손하게 주님이 주신 위대한 사명을 영접할 때입니다. "나를 따르라"(요한복음 20:19) 주님은 주님의 발자취를 따라 세상 만민을 섬길 수 있도록 교회를 부르셨습니다. 만일 하나님의 세상 구원 목적을 완수할 수 있는 다른 좋은 길이 있다면, 주님은 이 사명을 주시지 않았을 것입니다. 많은 성도들이 주님의 발자취를 따랐습니다. 크리스챤들이 주님의 발자취를 따랐을 때 교회는 세상의 빛이 되었습니다. 크리스챤들이 다른 방법들을 따랐을 때 교회는 생명력과 영향력을 잃었습니다. 하나님은 UBF를 축복하셨고 쓰셨습니다. 우리가 주님의 발자취를 따랐기 때문입니다. 우리는 섬김이 존중받지 않는 세상에 살고 있습니다. 그러나 우리는 젊은 영혼들을 위해 우리의 생명을 드렸을 때 주님께서 우리에게 그의 부요함을 채우셨습니다. 이는 세상의 일시적인 부요함이 아니고 하나님 나라의 영원한 부요함입니다. 또한 하나님은 영원한 열매를 맺게 하셨습니다. 이제 우리 중 대부분은 안정적인 사역을 이루고 있지만, 많은 선교사님들은 선교지에서 계속 하나님의 등불이 밝혀지도록 애를 쓰고 있습니다. 지금 우리가 서로를 돌아보고 함께 주님의 놀라운 사명을 완수할 때입니다. 지금 우리가 주님의 은혜를 기억하고 "나를 따르라" 우리를 부르시는 주님 말씀을 새롭게 영접해야 할 때입니다. 우리가 주님의 발자취를 계속 따른다면 하나님은 세계 캠퍼스를 향한 주님의 비젼을 완수하시기 위해 우리를 계속 사용하실 것입니다. 우리와 우리 자녀들을 축복하실 것입니다. 저는 주님의 긍휼과 도우심을 구함으로 제가 날마다 주님의 발자취를 따르길 기도합니다. 또한 저는 UBF 모든 동역자님들이 다음의 영적 방향을 위해 기도로 저와 동참해주시길 소망합니다. 첫째, 하나님이 주셨던 스피릿과 비젼을 회복해야 합니다. 우리는 하나님의 말씀을 공부하였고, 하나님 마음의 열정을 얻도록 기도했습니다. 믿음으로 복음을 전파하고자 단순하게 순종하고 나아갔습니다. 이때 하나님은 우리를 도우시고 장애물을 뛰어넘게 하셨습니다. 우리와 함께 일하셨습니다. 우리는 주는 정신으로 세계 선교를 섬겼습니다. 한국 UBF 지부들은 사도 바울과 바나바와 같이, 자신의 리더들을 선교사로 파송하였습니다. 그렇게 했을 때, 하나님은 이들의 수를 더욱 늘리셨습니다. 지난 35년 동안 한국 UBF는 1/3을 선교사로 파송하였습니다. 이는 역사적으로 가장 선교적 공동체였던 모라비안보다 3배가 넘는 일이었습니다. 우리가 섬기는 사람들의 생명을 살리기 위한 방법을 변화시킬 수 있지만, 하나님의 방법으로 하나님의 일을 섬기는 것은 바꿀 수 없습니다. 그것은 믿음과 순종과 주신 정신입니다. 우리가 주는 정신, 믿음, 순종으로 세계 선교를 섬길 수 있도록 기도합시다. 미국 UBF 지부들이 1/3을 선교사로 파송하길 기도합니다. 하나님에게는 한계가 없습니다. 우리가 주는 정신과 믿음으로 비젼을 가질 때 위대한 일을 이루어주실 수 있습니다. 둘째, 우리는 복음으로 살아야 합니다. 주님의 첫번째 메시지는 "이르시되 때가 찼고 하나님의 나라가 가까이 왔으니 회개하고 복음을 믿으라 하시더라"(마가복음 1:15)입니다. 복음의 목적은 죄인을 변화시켜서 하나님과 이웃을 사랑하는 영적인 사람되게 하는 것입니다. 우리의 제자도는 여기에 초점을 두어야 합니다. 어떻게 우리의 죄악된 본성이 변화될 수 있을까요? 오직 하나님 말씀 앞에서 진실되게 회개할 때 가능합니다. 우리는 하나님의 거룩하심과 사랑으로 충만해지도록 하나님을 대적하는 자기 중심성을 날마다 회개해야 합니다. 우리는 말씀을 가르칠 때도 이와 같이 영혼들을 도와야 합니다. 우리들은 사람들을 불러 모을 수 있지만 회개를 통한 성령의 역사하심이 없이 하나님의 사랑을 실천하는 제자들을 키울 수 없습니다. 이러한 변화의 역사가 없다면 하나님이 거하시고 선하신 목적을 위해 쓰실 수 있는 크리스챤 공동체를 세울 수 없습니다. 사도 바울은 "내가 예언하는 능력이 있어 모든 비밀과 모든 지식을 알고 또 산을 옮길 만한 모든 믿음이 있을지라도 사랑이 없으면 내가 아무 것도 아니요"(고린도전서 13:2)라고 말하면서 기독교의 특성을 가장 잘 표현했습니다. 우리의 사역은 한 영혼을 위한 하나님의 사랑에 기초를 두고 있습니다. 우리 공동체는 서로 사랑하는 것을 기초로 세워져야 합니다. 우리는 복음으로 살아야 했지만 그렇게 살지 않았다고 고백합니다. 하나님 앞에서 또한 우리의 사랑의 부족으로 인하여 아픔을 받은 사람들에게 용서를 구합니다. 400 UBF 지부들의 70 퍼센트는 한 가정이나 두 가정으로 운영됩니다. 이분들에게 사랑과 격려와 지원이 필요합니다. 도시마다, 나라마다, 대륙마다 사랑의 공동체가 세워지길 기도합니다. 이때 주님은 세상에 하나님의 빛을 비추는 산 위에 있는 공동체(마태복음 5:14) 같이 우리를 세우실 것입니다. 고 이사무엘 선교사님이 우리에 남겨둔 마지막 말씀은 "성경으로 돌아가라" 입니다. 성경은 그리스도와 그분의 복음에 관한 것입니다. 저는 하나님께서 고 이사무엘 선교사님을 통해 - 주는 정신과 믿음의 비젼을 회복하고 하나님의 말씀 앞에서 진실된 회개를 통해 복음으로 살기 위한 - UBF의 정확한 방향을 주셨다고 믿습니다. 셋째, 우리는 현지인 리더쉽을 세워야 합니다. 현지인 리더쉽을 세우는 것이 우리의 궁극적인 목표입니다. 현지인 리더는 선교사들의 2세와 현지인 리더를 포함합니다. 하나님은 선교사님들의 희생을 축복하셨고 가능성있는 현지 리더들을 세워주셨습니다. 각 지부들은 선교사들이 현지 리더들과 동역을 할 수 있는 환경을 잘 만들어 가야합니다. 또한 각 지부들은 선교사에서 현지 리더에게로 리더쉽을 이양할 수 있는 장기적 계획을 포함하여 현지인 리더쉽을 세우는 방법에 관한 계획이 있어야 합니다. 저는 현지 리더 양성을 위한 교육 프로그램을 개발하기 위해 대륙별 코디네이터와 함께 동역할 것입니다. 우리 모임을 위해 그리스도 안에서 사랑과 지원을 보여준 크리스챤 모임들과 친구들에게 감사드립니다. 특히 휘튼 대학의 John Armstrong 박사, Scott Moreau 박사에게 감사드립니다. 또한 Global Inter-Missions Network 대표 Samuel Ilsik Choe 목사에게 감사드립니다. 우리는 이 땅에 하나님의 나라를 확장하는 공동 목적을 위한 다른 대학 선교 단체를 포함하여 크리스챤 공동체들과 함께 동역할 것입니다. 하나님의 은혜로 우리는 예수님의 제자로 살도록 부르심을 받았습니다. 우리는 하나님의 은혜로 가장 영광스럽고 지혜로운 삶을 살아 온 것을 압니다. 주 예수님을 끝까지 따라갑시다. 하나님께서 우리에게 예수님의 스피릿을 충만하게 하시고 세계 캠퍼스 선교를 위한 사명을 완수하도록 주님의 발자취를 따르도록 도우시길 기도합니다. 다음과 같은 기도제목을 말씀드리겠습니다. 1. 하나님의 말씀으로 우리의 속 사람이 성화될 수 있도록 2. 일대일 말씀 공부로 제자들을 양성하도록 3. 2041년까지 10만명의 선교사가 양성되고 아직 개척되지 않은 140 개국으로 파송되고, 전 세계 모든 캠퍼스에 파송될 수 있도록 *English original version August 6, 2011 Fourth UBF General Director Inaugural Address “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” (2Co 8:9) Dear friends and fellow-workers in Christ. Here I stand to submit myself to the calling to assume the duties of the fourth General Director of UBF. I am deeply grateful to God for His grace and to all UBF coworkers for your trust. I’d like to thank Dr. John Jun for his hard work as General Director for the past five and a half years. He wholeheartedly cared for the frontline missionaries and built up relationships with Christian communities in the United States and Europe. May God be with him and M. Sunji Jun and bless the services they want to continue. As an organization, we have just celebrated the 50th anniversary. We were reminded of the spiritual heritage God bestowed on us through His servants, the Late Dr. Samuel Lee, and Mother Sarah Barry. From the beginning, God led UBF to serve world campus mission through disciple-making. We have devoted our youth, dreams, and desires to obey this commission. Eighteen hundred missionaries have gone to 92 countries, leaving comfortable lives in their homelands. Many of them have endured poverty, cultural and language barriers, persecution and hardships for pioneering self-supporting ministries. God has blessed us by raising thousands of native disciples and 2nd generation missionaries in 400 UBF chapters around the world. Praise be to God who called us to be a royal priesthood and a holy nation and who has done great work among us for the past 50 years! Before us there are 140 countries that are waiting for UBF missionaries. Even in the U.S.A and Germany, we have reached only 20% of major universities. This is the time we should newly and humbly receive the Lord’s Great Commission—“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations”(Mt 28:19-20).We must move on with the gospel of Jesus Christ. There are economic and political barriers. There are challenges of post-modern cultures. But I am convinced that our Almighty God who has led us for the past 50 years will enable us to carry out this great task if we wholeheartedly obey Him. While praying for this, the Spirit led me to the words of 2 Corinthians 8:9, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” For the greatest task of world salvation, our Lord took the way of servantship. He gave up the honor and glory as God. He became a man in order to be our friend. He was born in a stable and lived in poverty. He was despised and rejected. He served sinners until he gave his life on the cross. He could have chosen other ways, but he chose this way because it was God’s way. Through his poverty, he made us rich. He set us free from slavery to sin and death and restored God’s image in us. He gave us meaning and purpose in life; He gave us eternal life and the inheritance of the kingdom of God. He has filled us with love, peace, joy and hope, making us bear the fruit of righteousness through the Holy Spirit. To the Lord and God, the King of kings and Lord of lords, be praise and honor and glory forever! Amen. The Lord has entrusted His remaining work for world salvation to His church. We know the beautiful epilogue of John’s gospel. After predicting Apostle Peter’s martyrdom, the Risen Christ said to him, “Follow me” (Jn 20:19). It was the Lord’s calling for His church to serve the people of the world in His footsteps. If there are other easier ways for the church to fulfill God’s world salvation purpose, the Lord would have not given this command. Peter and all the other apostles followed the Lord’s footsteps. Numerous saints followed the Lord’s footsteps. When Christians followed the Lord’s footsteps, the church became the light of the world. When Christians followed other ways, the church lost life and influence. God blessed and used UBF because we have followed the Lord’s footsteps. We are living in a world in which servantship is not honored. When we served young people giving our lives, however, the Lord filled us with His richness—not the richness of the world that is temporal, but the richness of heaven that is eternal. And God enabled us to bear fruit that lasts forever. Now many of us have stable lives and ministries, while many missionaries are struggling to keep God’s lamp burning in their mission fields. This is the time we should look after one another and carry out the Lord’s Great Commission together. This is the time we should remember the grace of our Lord and newly accept his calling, “Follow me.” If we continue to follow the Lord in His footsteps, God will continue to use us for fulfilling His vision for world campuses, and God will bless us and our children. I ask the Lord for his mercy and help so that I may follow His footsteps daily.I’d like to ask all of my fellow workers in UBF to join me in prayer for the following spiritual direction: First, we should restore the spirit and vision we had. We studied God’s word, prayed for God’s heart’s desire, and simply obeyed and went out to preach the good news by faith. Then God enabled us to overcome obstacles and worked with us. We served world mission with a giving spirit. Korea UBF chapters sent out their leaders as missionaries, like Apostle Paul and Barnabas. When they did so, God blessed them to grow in number. For the past 35 years, Korea UBF has sent out one third of its members as missionaries, which is over three times more than the Moravians, who are known to be the most missionary-minded community in history. We change our ways in order to win the people we serve, but we must not change in serving God’s work in God’s way—through faith, obedience, and giving. Let’s pray that we may serve world mission with a giving spirit and by faith and obedience. I pray that U.S.A UBF chapters may send out one third of their members as missionaries. God is not limited. He will show great things when we serve Him with spirit of giving and vision by faith. Second, we should live the gospel. Our Lord’s first message was “The time has come. The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!” (Mk 1:15) The purpose of the gospel is to transform a sinful person into a spiritual person who loves God and loves neighbors. Our discipleship should be focused on this. How can our sinful nature be transformed? It is only through sincere repentance before the word of God. We should daily repent of our self-centeredness that stands against God so that we are filled with God’s holiness and love. We should help our Bible students to do the same. We can recruit people by programs, but we cannot raise disciples who practice God’s love without a work of the Holy Spirit in them through repentance. Without this transforming work, we cannot build a Christian community which God can dwell in and use for his purpose. Apostle Paul best characterized Christianity when he said, “If I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing” (1Co 13:2). Our ministry should be based on God’s love for one soul. Our community should be built on love for one another. We confess that we didn’t live the gospel as we should. I ask forgiveness from God and from those who were hurt in our ministry due to our lack of love. Seventy percent of 400 UBF chapters are run by one or two families. They need love, encouragement, and support. Let’s pray to build a community of love in each city, nation, and continent. Then the Lord will make us a city on a hill that shines God’s light to the world. The Late Dr. Samuel Lee’s last words for us were to “go back to the Bible.” The Bible is about Christ and his gospel. I believe that God, through Dr. Lee, pointed out the right direction of UBF—to restore the spirit of giving and vision by faith and to live the gospel through sincere repentance before the word of God. Third, we should build up native leadership. Raising native leaders is the ultimate goal of our ministry. Native leaders include the 2nd-gens of missionaries and native leaders. God has blessed the sacrifice of our missionaries and raised thousands of potential native leaders. Each chapter should promote an environment in which missionaries work together with native leaders. Each chapter should also have a plan concerning how to build up native leadership including a long-range plan of leadership transfer from missionaries to native leaders. I will work with continental coordinators to develop education programs for raising native leaders. I’d like to thank Christian organizations and friends who have shown affection in Christ and support for our organization. I especially thank Dr. John Armstrong and Dr. Scott Moreau at Wheaton College. I also thank Rev. Samuel Ilsik Choe, president of Global Inter-Missions Network. We will continue partnership with Christian communities including the other campus mission organizations for the common purpose of expanding God’s kingdom on earth. By God’s grace, we were called to live the life of Jesus’ disciples. We know we have lived the most glorious and wisest life by His grace. Let’s follow the Lord Jesus to the end. May God fill us with the Spirit of Jesus as we follow his footsteps for fulfilling His commission for world campus evangelization. I’d like to ask all UBF coworkers to hold on to the following prayer topics: 1. Sanctification of our inner persons by the word of God 2. Raise disciples through one-to-one Bible studies 3.
