사라의 죽음과 장례



본장에는 사라의 죽음과 장사가 묘사되고 있습니다. 

갈대아 우르를 떠나 아브라함과 믿음의 여정을 걸은 지 62년 만에 

향년 127세 - 여자로서는 유일하게 나이가 기록된 사람이라는군요 - 로 생을 마감한 사라는 

약속된 씨의 어머니요 모든 믿는 자의 어머니가 되었습니다. 

아브라함은 약속의 땅 가나안에서 죽은 사라를 위해 그곳 매장지를 일부러 값을 주고 샀습니다. 

이로 말미암아 약속의 땅을 처음 정식적으로 소유하게 되고 사라는 막벨라 굴에 묻히게 되었습니다.

하나님이로부터 약속받은 가나안에 묻히면서 동시에 진정한 약속의 땅 하늘나라에 들어간 것입니다. 

이후 아브라함 자신과 이삭과 리브가, 야곱과 레아 등이 이곳에 묻혔습니다. 



1 Sarah lived to be a hundred and twenty-seven years old. 



2 She died at Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, 

  and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her.

  * mourn: MS word 프로그램에서 마우스 오른쪽 버튼 클릭하고 동의어를 찾아보니까 

    grieve (over), express grief, lament, bewail, bemoan, weep for 등이 나오네요. 

    어떤 의미인지 짐작이 가시죠? (ex)mourn for the dead: 죽은 이를 애도하다



3 Then Abraham rose from beside his dead wife and spoke to the Hittites. He said,

4 "I am an alien and a stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead."

  * property: 재산, 소유물, 소유지, 고유의 특성, 특질 (cf) real property: 부동산 (immovables, real estate, realty) 



6 "Sir, listen to us. You are a mighty prince among us. 

  Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. 

  None of us will refuse you his tomb for burying your dead."

  * choice: 고르고 고른, 엄선한, 극상품의, 까다롭게 가리는



8 He said to them, "If you are willing to let me bury my dead, 

  then listen to me and intercede with Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf

9 so he will sell me the cave of Machpelah, which belongs to him and is at the end of his field. 

  Ask him to sell it to me for the full price as a burial site among you."

* intercede: 중재하다, 조정하다 (ex) intercede with the teacher for A. A를 위해 선생님께 좋게 말해주다



10 Ephron the Hittite was sitting among his people and he replied to Abraham 

  in the hearing of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of his city.



11 "No, my lord," he said. "Listen to me; I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. 

  I give it to you in the presence of my people. Bury your dead."



12 Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land

13 and he said to Ephron in their hearing, "Listen to me, if you will. 

  I will pay the price of the field. Accept it from me so I can bury my dead there."



15 "Listen to me, my lord; the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver, 

  but what is that between me and you? Bury your dead."

  * 예의상 2, 3, 1인칭으로 말하는 것이 보통이지만, 안 좋은 일에는 거꾸로 1, 3, 2인칭으로 말합니다. 

  

16 Abraham agreed to Ephron's terms and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: 

  four hundred shekels of silver, according to the weight current among the merchants.

  * term: 기간, 학기, 용어. terms: 계약 조건, 요구액, 말투.

  * current: 통용되는, 현행의, 현재의, 흐름, 해류, 경향, 전류. (cf) currency: 통화



17 So Ephron's field in Machpelah near Mamre - both the field and the cave in it, 

  and all the trees within the borders of the field - was deeded

18 to Abraham as his property in the presence of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of the city.

  * deed: 행위, 사실, 공적, 증서, 증서를 작성하여 (재산을) 양도하다.



19 Afterward Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre 

  (which is at Hebron) in the land of Canaan.



20 So the field and the cave in it were deeded to Abraham by the Hittites as a burial site.
